A Special Message from our Bishop

A Message from our Bishop
…also a couple of updates and a correction

Good morning and happy Friday! I pray all of you are doing well and you’re plans for the weekend include attending worship on Sunday morning!! This week we’ll have some special music by our own Ed & Irina Heer, as well as an instrumental prelude by Trina. In our “Bad Boys and Girls of the Bible” series we’ll be talking about Eve and whether she was “Willful or Wise.” I’ll send out our digital bulletin as well as log-in information for both our worship service and “Meet & Greet” time later today or tomorrow.

Correction: Men’s Breakfast Meeting Date
I also have a correction to something I sent out earlier this week. Our Men’s Breakfast group IS NOT meeting tomorrow…they will meet on May 16 via Zoom. Joe Hauer will send out log-in information beforehand. If you want to be on the list to receive that information, please contact Joe. If you need his contact information, call our church office.

A Message from Our Bishop
Yesterday we received an important update from our Episcopal Leader, Bishop Bob Hoshibata. If you would like to read his entire message, please click here. You’ll recall earlier this month our Bishop directed all United Methodist Church’s in our Conference suspend all in-person gatherings, including worship, Sunday School classes, Small Group Ministries, outside group meetings, etc. through the month of April. At Song of Life, we responded by moving all such gatherings to various online platforms,

In his most current message, Bishop Bob has directed our churches to “continue the suspension of in-person worship and other gatherings of any size until further notice.

What this means is that we at Song of Life UMC will continue offering worship online using Facebook Live and/or our weblink that you will find on our website at songoflifeumc.org/covid-19. We will also continue offering other groups, classes, meetings, and other gatherings using Zoom. If you need help using any of these online platforms, please contact me by phone at 480-766-9272, or our Admin Assistant Robena through the church office phone number at 480-641-1200.

Here are a few excerpts from his message:

Like many of us, I have missed the rhythms of the church: in-person worship, coffee and conversation, potlucks, hugs, Bible studies and fellowship. You may likewise be feeling lost, and displaced, living in a wilderness, wandering. Despite our efforts to adapt, we long for things to be back as they used to be….
We have not yet seen the worst of the ravages of the novel coronavirus (nCoV). Additionally, the medical community is warning us that a second occurrence is possible, especially when communities relax restrictions too soon….
I wish I could more accurately predict when we can resume our activities. I know we won’t be able to resume everything at once. It will be a gradual, careful process. It is also clear that we will not soon, if ever, return to being church exactly as we were before. This is difficult news to receive, but I pray you will not rush to resume church activities.

I want you to know I’ve received and read many recommendations related to preparing for the day when we will be able to meet in-person again, not only from our Conference Office but also from other offices and individuals associated with the United Methodist Church. I am also sharing these resources as appropriate with your Leadership Board so we can make the best decisions that will help keep you safe and healthy. Like you – and like our Bishop and other leaders – I can’t wait to be back in worship in person with all of you, but I also want us to be safe and healthy, so we will abide by our Bishop’s direction and will prepare for the day when we will be able to come together in one place for worship and other gatherings.

May God continue to be with you and bless you and keep you during this unusual time in which we are living.

Grace and Peace,
Pastor Jody
